In this course we will address the basic skills that you will require in order to wild camp safely and comfortably.
The four basics of survival will be covered and although this is not a survival course this knowledge is of great importance when attempting to camp in the wild for the first time.
These basics are fire, water, food and shelter.
Fire.
• How to build a campfire
• How to light a campfire
• Fire for cooking
• Fire for warmth
• Fire by friction
• Construct and use your own bowdrill set
• Different types of tinder
• How to safely chop and split wood – which tool is best
Water
• How to find water
• How to collect water
• Different methods of water purification
Food
• Camp hygiene
• Wild food walk
• Cooking with an open fire
• Preparation of fish for cooking
• Basic traps
• Basic tracking
Shelter
• Build your own shelter and sleep in it (optional!)
• Using natural cover
• Natural bedding
• Staying warm and dry
This course will also cover knife safety and you will have the opportunity to carve a basic spoon or a tracking stick.
By the end of this weekend course you will have gained enough knowledge to safely and comfortably camp in the wild.
The course is relaxed and friendly and open to everyone regardless of
expertise.
